Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Soft tissue-biased manual therapy techniques without penetrating the skin and the underlying tissue can be achieved with the assistance of instruments. These instruments are mostly hard metal objects of various lengths, angles, weights, and contours. There is wide variability in instrument manufacturing companies and subsequently their protocols although they all fall under the IASTM treatment subset. IASTM when used appropriately can aid in fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis, and remodeling through mechanoreceptor stimulation in other words this treatment can assist in facilitating the healing process. IASTM can also aid in decreasing skin sensitivity, and scar tissue pliability IASTM is not used to destroy, deform, or break up tissue. The desired outcome in an injured or uninjured patient is primarily pain reduction, increased ROM, increased mobility of the restricted tissues, and decreased tone.

At ProActive Physical Therapy our Physical Therapists have formal training in Manual Therapy practice. We complete a mindful, comprehensive physical examination. We thoroughly screen and determine the probability of success in choosing an intervention. We discuss other interventions as options and provide risks and benefits associated with choosing such interventions. Our practice is person-centered, which means we include patients in the clinical decision-making process and consider our patients’ beliefs when choosing interventions. We use the gentlest techniques as the first option and always follow up with our patients.
