Dry Needling

Dry Needling

Dry Needling is a skilled technique performed by a Physical Therapist using filiform dry needles to penetrate the skin and underlying tissues to affect change in the body structures and functions for the evaluation and management of neuromusculoskeletal conditions, pain, movement impairments, and disability for preventive and therapeutic purposes.

Clinical trials have shown that dry-needling treatments are helpful in short-term pain reduction. The duration of pain reduction is contingent upon the chronicity of the condition, and the techniques utilized in performing dry needling. There is no medicine injected through the needle hence the name “Dry”. It is not a treatment intended to search and destroy trigger points in the muscle.

Considering the anatomical variability and the treatment protocols this treatment can aid in improving muscle recruitment, performance, and in certain cases ROM. It is seldom used as a stand-alone treatment; however, certain conditions and a minority of patients might benefit from dry needling as a stand-alone treatment

At ProActive Physical Therapy, our Physical Therapists have formal training and are licensed to practice Dry Needling. We complete a mindful, comprehensive physical examination. We thoroughly screen and determine the probability of success in choosing an intervention. We discuss other interventions as options and provide risks and benefits associated with selecting such interventions. Our practice is person-centered, which means we include patients in the clinical decision-making process and consider our patients’ beliefs when choosing interventions. We use the gentlest techniques as the first option and always follow up with our patients.
