Manual Therapy is an individualized, hands-on treatment for Neuro-Musculoskeletal conditions. Treatments can be directed to influence the affected joints, nerves, and soft tissue.
Some techniques your therapist might use to affect or bias the joints are spinal Manipulation, Joint Mobilization, Mobilization with Movement (MWM), and/or Muscle Energy Techniques (MET). The desired outcome could be one or all of the following: improved ROM, decreased muscle spasm or abnormal tone, improved muscle performance or ability to recruit, and or pain reduction. Manual Therapy specifically spinal manipulation does not cure disease, increase immunity, or align/fix postures.
Nerve-biased Manual Therapy Techniques are primarily utilized for neural mobility (neural dynamics) with the desired or intended outcome being pain reduction. This can be achieved by techniques that involve passive segmental movements of the spine and extremities and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) in the vicinity of a nerve to mobilize the soft tissue surrounding the nerve. Refer to IASTM to understand soft tissue-biased Manual Therapy.
At ProActive Physical Therapy our Physical Therapists have formal training in Manual Therapy practice. We complete a mindful, comprehensive physical examination. We thoroughly screen and determine the probability of success in choosing an intervention. We discuss other interventions as options and provide risks and benefits associated with selecting such interventions. Our practice is person-centered, which means we include patients in the clinical decision-making process, and consider our patients’ beliefs when selecting interventions. We use the gentlest techniques as the first option and always follow up with our patients.
Our therapists are trained and certified in therapy technique
